A Decade And A Half Ago, Apple Launched the App Store. Last Year, It Generated $1.1 Trillion for Developers

According to independent research conducted by analysts from Analysis Group, Apple’s Apps Store ecosystem supported $1.1 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2022, building on developers’ track record of robust, resilient growth. The App Store continues to provide amazing opportunities for developers worldwide, with more than 90% of billings and sales going to developers and companies of all kinds – with no commission paid to Apple. Furthermore, according to a new Progressive Policy Institute study, the iOS app economy currently supports more than 4.8 million employees in the United States and Europe, with around 2.4 million in each country.

Apple developers now have more options than ever to monetize their products and establish profitable companies. According to Analysis Group economists, App Store developers produced $910 billion in total billings and sales from physical products and services last year, $109 billion from in-app advertising, and $104 billion from digital goods and services.

Apple Developers Generated 1.1 Trillion Last Year from the Apple Store Launched 15 Years Back!

When Apple released the iPhone in 2007, there was no App Store to accompany it. Instead, Steve Jobs desired that developers create third-party web apps. To say the App Store has been a success for both Apple and developers is an understatement, at least according to an independent analysis by economists at the Analysis Group. According to the survey, App Store developers would make $1.1 trillion in total billings and sales by 2022.

  • More than 90% of the $1.1 trillion in billings and sales went to developers—Apple did not take a cut.
  • To break down the $1.1 trillion figure further, $910 billion came from physical goods and services, such as T-shirts purchased through the Etsy app or a coffee table purchased through the Walmart app; $109 billion came from in-app advertising; and the remaining $104 billion came from digital goods and services.
  • The $1.1 trillion amount for 2022 is a 29% increase over 2021. Meanwhile, 2021 experienced a 27% year-on-year growth over 2020. In addition, 2020 experienced a 27% year-on-year growth over 2019. In other words, even 15 years after its introduction, the App Store continues to expand at a double-digit rate.
  • When just small developers are considered, their growth rate outpaces that of bigger developers from 2020 to 2022. During that period, their wages increased by 71%.
  • While sales and billings in the United States have increased by more than 80% since 2019, sales and billings in Europe have increased by 116% over the same period.
  • The relaxation of pandemic limitations has increased demand for specific types of applications. Travel app sales surged by 84% in 2022, while ride-hailing app sales increased by 45% in the same year.
  • Since the opening of the App Store in 2008, apple developers have earned over $320 billion, while customers have downloaded 370 billion applications.

According to Analysis, iOS developers have made more than $320 billion over the last decade and a half.

However, the App Store has spread to other Apple platforms, including iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. In all circumstances, they provide a comparable experience, with a single point of contact for application search, download, and purchase.

The App Store Turns Fifteen
